Significant 5.9 quake hits near Larissa, Lárisa, Thessaly, Greece
An
earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred only 8 minutes ago 27 km northwest
of Larissa, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The
quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near
Larissa, Lárisa, Thessaly, Greece, around noon on Wednesday 3 March 2021
at 12:16 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of
the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as
seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other
agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a
second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre
(EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.9. A third agency, the
German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at
magnitude 6.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake
should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In
those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to
inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

the epicenter, and Trikala (pop. 61,700) 36 km away.

69 km away, Nea Ionia (pop. 32,700) 79 km away, Volos (pop. 86,000) 81
km away, Lamia (pop. 52,000) 96 km away, and Thessaloniki (pop. 354,300)
123 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
