The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude
6.1 quake in Taiwan near Yilan, Taiwan, only 10 minutes ago. The
earthquake hit in the evening on Thursday 10 December 2020 at 9:19 pm
local time at a moderately shallow depth of 67 km. The exact magnitude,
epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few
hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their
calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second
report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological
Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.9 earthquake.
Based
on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many
people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused
significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken
windows, etc.
In Yilan (pop. 94,200) located 30 km from the
epicenter, Keelung (pop. 397,500) 57 km away, Taipei (pop. 7,871,900) 65
km away, Banciao (pop. 543,300) 68 km away, Daxi (pop. 84,500) 79 km
away, Taoyuan City (pop. 402,000) 82 km away, Hualien City (pop.
350,500) 91 km away, Hsinchu (pop. 404,100) 109 km away, and Puli (pop.
86,400) 135 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
