The quake was located 36km (22 miles) south-east of Mountain, Colombia, and at a depth of 10km.
The European earthquake monitoring agency (EMSC) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there is a possibility of tsunamis along the coast.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage caused by the earthquake so far.
