Typhoon Mangkhut Today

Typhoon Mangkhut west of Guam, also Tropical Storm Barijat in the South China Sea

9/11/2018 1:00:00 AM
As of Monday evening, EDT, Typhoon Mangkhut is centered almost 200 miles west-northwest of Guam. Mangkhut was moving to the west at 18 mph, having highest sustained winds near 100 mph.
Now that Mangkhut has left the Mariana Islands, very warm open waters of the Philippine Sea lie ahead of its path for more than 1,000 miles, as movement will be mainly toward the west. The overall favorable environment will allow significant strengthening for at least the next 36-48 hours. Indeed, Mangkhut shows potential to become a super typhoon by midweek.
Forecast tools available to AccuWeather.com continue to show a slight jog in path to the Luzon Strait off northern Luzon Island, Philippines, late in the week. Ultimately, Mangkhut could strike south China in or near Hong Kong by the end of the week.
Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Barijat was located in the northeastern South China Sea about 300 miles east-southeast of Hong Kong. Maximum sustained winds are 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Barijat is moving west-southwest at 14 mph.
Barijat is forecast to pass south of Hong Kong Wednesday, local time. Barijat is expected to bring flooding rain and gusty winds to the southern coast of China as well as Hainan later Wednesday through Thursday.
