LARGE 5.6 earthquake STRIKES Pu’er City, China

A MAGNITUDE 5.9 earthquake has hit Pu’er City, in southwest China, in the Yunnan Province, the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC) has confirmed.

CENC reported the quake struck at 10.31 BJT (3.30am BST).
A moderate earthquake registers between 5 and 5.9 on the Richter scale and causes slight damage to buildings and other structures.
The tremor was originally 5.9, but it was later downgraded to 5.6.
Local government said houses were shaking and terrified residents rushed out from their homes to open spaces.

The quake struck in a densely populated area and there is the potential for some damage.
People living in high-rise buildings in Kunming, capital of Yunnan, which is 270km away from Mojiang, also felt the tremors.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage caused by it so far.
According to CENC the epicentre with a depth of 11 km, was monitored at 23.28 degrees north latitude and 101.53 degrees east longitude.

On August 15, 24 people were injured after a 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook Thonghai County, in the city of Yuxi.
Only 24 hours before, the same region was hit by a less powerful quake.

Yunnan is one of the most underdeveloped provinces in China, with more counties considered to be poverty-stricken than anywhere else in the nation.
