A severe thunderstorm swept through northern Italy on August
10, 2017, causing significant damage and injuring at least 48 people.
Veneto Province authorities said winds reached 114 km/h (70.8 mph),
making it one of the 5 worst storms in the last 30 years.
The worst affected was the Cavallino campsite, east of Venice, where strong winds toppled trees onto trailers and tents. 48 people were wounded at the campsite, 3 were hospitalized with serious injuries.
The storm caused damage along the coast and in Venice where frightened tourists sought shelter.
Damage was also reported in the municipalities of Chioggia, Jesolo, Portogruaro, and San Donà. Veneto region Governor Luca Zaia declared an open state of crisis while waiting for damage reports from towns and cities.
A destructive macroburst reportedly rolled through Isola di Albarella, Province of Rovigno, west of Venice, leaving significant damage.
