A very strong 5.9R earthquake was felt in Philippines this morning. The epicentre was 9km from San Pedro.
We have been expecting this event and we have predicted the coordinates.
The temblor at 9:41 a.m. was an aftershock of the 6.5 quake that hit the Central Visayan region on Thursday, July 6, according to a bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Radio reports said the ground shake sent students hitting the ground and later streaming out of their classrooms.
The epicenter of the tectonic earthquake was located 9 kilometers southeast of Ormoc City at a depth of 1 kilometer, Phivolcs said.
Intensity V was felt in Ormoc while Intensity IV in the town of Mayorga and Tacloban City in Leyte, as well as Mandaue City in Cebu province.
Instrumental intensities measured Intensity III in Cebu City and Intensity II in Palo, Leyte; Lapu-Lapu City and Cebu City.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said Monday’s quake was the “strongest” aftershock so far from last week’s temblor.
Solidum allayed fears of earthquake-hit localities in Leyte saying the aftershocks would not cause damage to their homes, unless these were already damaged by the earlier ground shake.
The Phivolcs said no aftershocks were expected from Monday morning’s quake.
