A
5.9-magnitude earthquake has struck the northwest of Papua New Guinea, with no
reports of casualties or material damage by authorities, or even the activation
of the tsunami alert.
The US
Geological Survey, which records seismic activity worldwide, said the epicentre
was 66 kilometres deep and 58 kilometers northwest of the coastal town of
Finschhafen.
Papua New
Guinea is located near the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of high
seismic and volcanic activity that experiences around 7000 tremors every year,
mostly of low itensity.
