The earthquake measuring 4.9 on Richter scale had its epicentre 60 kilometres northeast of Benazirabad, formerly Nawabshah, at a depth of 20 kilometres, said Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Waseem Ahmed, 40, died as the roof of his house in a village of rural Sun town, Jamshoro district caved in. Similarly, five others who were injured in Sun and Sakrand towns were shifted to Civil Hospital, Hyderabad. They were identified as, Rabia, 30, Sajida 25, Komal, 15, Yaseel Ali 40 and Begunnisa.
Tremors were also felt in Hyderabad, Matiari, Kotri, Hala, Saeedabad and Sanghar districts of the province.
Earlier on September 5, 57 students were injured during a stampede in a local school in Battagram as a 4.5-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
Similarly in August 31, a quake measuring 5.1 with a focal depth of 10 kilometres shook parts of Islamabad and adjoining areas, with its epicenter being China’s Sichuan area.
The number of earthquakes in Pakistan has been rising steadily over the past five years. The PMD recorded about 851 seismic disturbances in 2015.
Pakistan comes in the South Asian region, which has three large mountain ranges at a junction of seismic fault lines. In the north is the stationary Eurasian tectonic plate. In the south is the moving Indian plate, which makes the zone more prone to earthquakes.
