Magnitude-4.9 AND 5.3R earthquake rocks southeastern S. Korea



An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 first and then recently a 5.3R, was detected at 7:44 p.m. (10:44 and 11:32 GMT)  near Gyeongju, a historic city in southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, and it jolted the country's southwestern region, South Korea's meteorological agency said Monday.

Busan Regional Meteorological Administration pinpointed the epicenter of the quake at 8 kilometers south of Gyeongju, some 371 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The quake was felt throughout Gyeongsang Province.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or major damage. The tremors were felt throughout Gyeongju and its surrounding cities, including Ulsan.

The epicenter was estimated at 8 kilometers southwest of the city, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

No damage was immediately reported, although most people in the region felt homes and buildings shake. (Yonhap)
