Aug 21, 2016- Earthquake survivors and local authorities in Kavre and Gorkha have said that a majority of the I/NGOs working in earthquake affected areas are not doing their job swiftly.
The Kavre District Development Committee has said out of 18 I/NGOs involved in reconstruction work, only a few have been submitting their progress reports regularly.
“We don’t know what most of the other I/NGOs are up to,” said Maya Bade, the chief of NGO desk at the DDC.
The I/NGOs in the district, however, claim that their projects were delayed because of monsoon and the National Reconstruction Authority’s delay in issuing permission for them to work in the earthquake-affected areas.
A housing project run by the Swiss organisation, Terre des hommes, in Majhipheda, Sallebhumlu, Phalate, Kharpachok and Kushadevi has been delayed by months.
Ram Bahadur Ghimire, the programme coordinator, said the project was affected as the NRA did not issue the permit to build homes in time.
Another organisation, Samaritan’s Purse Nepal, which has taken permission to build 255 homes in Rayale and Dapcha Kashikhanda Municpality, has only build five homes so far. The work has been hindered due to monsoon rains, he said, adding that they have until December to complete the project.
In Gorkha, quake survivors have expressed dissatisfaction over the work done by I/NGOs in the district.
They have not worked properly and the local administration has failed to monitor their activities, said Bil Bahadur Chepang, an earthquake survivor. Mohanlal Shrestha, another quake survivor, shared a similar view on I/NGOs working in post-earthquake recovery field. They are not being monitored by the local authorities, he said. Government officials in the district also agree that a majority of the I/NGOs have done only a little 15 months after the 2015 earthquake. Chief District Officer Narayan Bhatta said the I/NGOs have been directed to complete their projects in time. (With inputs from our district correspondents)
