A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit 19 km south-east of Bayside on Thursday, rocking the communities around it.
At the news station, it felt like a jolt, as though someone had pushed the building. According to the USGS website, the quake was 22.9 km in depth. People that were in Bayside at the time either didn’t feel it at all or said it was definitely significant.
"I felt the distinct feeling of an earthquake! And I said to my friend, I think there's an earthquake," said Janet Czarneck, owner of the Redwood Roots Farm in Bayside. "She didn't feel it, and she kept on talking and I was like maybe there wasn't an earthquake, but there really was! I felt it!"
“ I was just squatting next to the plants and I felt like a jolt and I was like oh someone must have dropped something and then I remembered we were outside,” said Traci Edson, who was at the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
The jolt affected local grocery stores as well. Employees at the Safeway on Harris were still cleaning up spills and broken items about 45 minutes after the quake.
