KOTA BELUD: The Sabah government today gave RM678,000 in aid to 226 residents whose homes were damaged by the earthquake that hit Ranau on June 5, last year.
The aid was handed out to them by Usukan assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, who is also Communications and Multimedia Minister.
Also present were Kota Belud district officer Abdul Gari Itam, who is also the Kota Belud District Disaster Committee chairman.
Earlier, in his speech, Abdul Gari said the RM3,000 for each of the victims was the state government’s contribution to ease their burden as victims of the earthquake.
“This shows the government’s commitment in helping the victims…the government always takes the initiative to ensure comfort and wellbeing for those hit by disasters,” he said.
The moderate earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale that hit Ranau, also caused damage to houses in several villages in the Kota Belud area.
Abdul Gari said they were also seeking funds to rebuild 11 houses that were badly damaged by the earthquake.
“We have discussed this matter with the relevant parties with certain things having to be done first, including finding a safer site, before rebuilding the houses.
“We hope to rebuild the houses soonest possible as the affected families are now staying with relatives,” he said. – Bernama
