Depending on where you live, earthquakes can be fairly common. They may not be the earth-shattering quakes you see in disaster movies, but it only takes a little shaking to wreck your stuff. Here a few easy tips for making your home more quake-proof.
Ross S. Stein, a geophysicist at Stanford University, has a few simple suggestions to get your home ready for minor quakes:
- Bolt heavy objects to the wall, like televisions, artwork, shelving, and even furniture that could topple over.
- Latch cupboards containing glass and other breakables.
- Keep a headlamp by your bed because the power will probably go out.
Stein lives only three miles from the legendary San Andreas fault himself, so he also keeps a crowbar under his bed in case he needs to jimmy open a door, and he has a good stock of emergency supplies on hand.
