Sleeping city gets earthquake shock

BY JUDITH AISTHORPE:

People may have been woken up to the ground rumbling beneath their beds in the Top End at 4.31am on Wednesday.

The magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred over 700km away in the Banda Sea and 234km below sea level.

Geoscience Australia duty seismologist Daniel Connolly said although the Banda Sea, which is north of Darwin, was quite active area for earthquakes, this one occurred deeper than usual below the sea level.

He said the area had an unusual phenomenon where earthquakes were generally felt further away the deeper they occurred.

“Deep earthquakes tend to get felt in Darwin, which is 700km away, but not felt in islands that are 100km away,” Mr Connolly said.

“The shallower earthquakes tend to not get felt.
