Brave explorers pose for selfies by terrifying erupting volcano in incredible footage

Three explorers have captured the moment they stood just metres away from roaring lake of lava - in what they claim is the most 'incredible volcano footage filmed in 2015.'

Bradley Ambrose, George Kourounis and Nik Halik, made the climb to the Benbow volcano on Ambrym Island in Vanuatu where they captured the stunning video.

In the clip, filmed on December 6, George is seen emerging over the cliff face, wearing a silver suit intended to protect him from the heat.

Behind him, lava roars dangerously, just metres away from where he stands.

Nik, who did not appear to have descended into the volcano, took a selfie on the side of the volcano but posing with his electric guitar.

New Zealander Bradley 36, took the snaps and said that it's not the first mission he's been on with his pals.

Previously, Chris Horsely, 22, from Lancashire descended the 1,200ft to Marum lava lake in Vanuatu (the other active volcano on the island) with Bradley and their fellow explorer Geoff Mackley, 50.

At the time, Bradley explained: “It is a live volcano and inherently dangerous. One slip could turn anyone into ash.

"We try to keep time at the edge at a minimum because the proximity suits actually cause you to overheat by trapping your body heat within them.

"I've also been hit by newly ejected lapilli, and even though they're small, they still pack enough heat to scold your skin instantly and melt clothing and burn through material."

"It's like opening an oven door that's on high and putting your head in," he continued.

"Less than 20 people have made it to the bottom in the world and we were involved in every single successful descent."

The latest footage has been shared on Geoff's website www.geoffmackley.com.

Geoff, from Christchurch, New Zealand, has been a photographer for 24 years.

He said: "My filming activities in recent years have evolved around my passion for the natural world and in particular, nature in her most violent moods: erupting volcanoes, hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, tornadoes...the greatest show on Earth."
