More than 100 people reported feeling a 4.5 magnitude earthquake within 10 minutes of it striking near Haast at 9.03am today.
It was pinpointed at 15km deep and 45km east of Haast.
The Greymouth Star spoke to a number of Haast residents who did not feel it; many of those who reported it on the GeoNet website were from Otago, and even as far away as Dunedin.
Okuru resident Fay Eggeling said they had heard a number of earthquakes lately, but had not felt any of them.
"A few nights ago, about quarter to nine, there was a big noise, but no shaking. Kerry (husband) looked it up and it was at Barn Bay. We keep hearing loud noises like an explosion, for a couple of years now, but no shaking."
GNS classified this morning's quake as 'strong'.
It was followed by a magnitude 4 earthquake at 9.49am, in the same location and also 15km deep. Again, initial 'felt' reports were based in Otago.
