A BESTSELLING author who inspired the world with tales of a lost Atlantis civilisation now says the same comet that killed them is about to kill us. So does he have a leg to stand on?The story goes something like this:

An ancient Ice Age super-civilisation was pulverised into oblivion about 12,000 years ago in a cataclysm sparked by a passing comet named Encke.

The ragged remnants of this same shattered civilisation then set about transmitting warnings through the eons that this comet was set to return. After sleuthing through ancient, encoded clues scattered across the surface (and subsurface) of the Earth comes the revelation: it’s going to hit our planet in 2030.

This is the central premise of Graham Hancock’s new book, Magicians of the Gods, which was released a week ago. It’s classified nonfiction.It’s a follow-up to an earlier work, Fingerprints of the Gods, which he published 20 years ago in an attempt to assemble evidence of a technologically advanced Atlantean civilisation lost in the last ice age. It sold millions of copies.“These Magicians left a message for us — not a metaphorical, spiritual message, but a direct and urgent warning,” Hancock wrote for the Daily Mail. “What happened before can happen again; what destroyed their world can destroy ours.”

There are a few problems with his theory, however.
