Advance historic page from August 17, 1976: Philippine earthquake casualties could surpass WWII
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Today's archive page is from August 17, 1976.
An earthquake hit the southern Philippines killing more than 1,000 people. Many of the victims were killed by huge tidal waves that swamped coastal homes following the earthquake.
The Geophysical Observatory in Manila said that the first tremor of the quake was the strongest in the Philippines since Aug. 2, 1968.
Dr. Vicente Galvez, Red Cross secretary general, said casualties from the quake could surpass the nation's death toll during World War II.
