Alert! 5.9M Earthquake Shakes Russian Town


An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale has hit Severo Kuril’sk, Russia. No immediate reports of casualties and fatalities were given by the authorities in the small town located on the island of


Paramushir. Severo Kuril’sk has an estimated population of 2,500. A 5.9M earthquake in the Russian town may a have devastating impact.

The Ministry of Emergencies and Disaster Relief has dispatched a team to assess the impact of the tremor in Severo Kuril’sk. Vladmir Artamonov, deputy head in the ministry, confirmed that all efforts are being done to provide relief to those who might have been affected by the natural disaster. The department has made tents and fresh water supplies available for those who might have been affected. The 5.9M quake in the Russian town is said to have affected nearby cities of Vilyuchinsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy.

A tsunami alert has also been sent to the island town and residents have been warned to stay away from the beach. This is a second earth tremor to hit Russia after the lunar eclipse this year. 18 days ago the city of Severobaykals, Buryat was rocked by a 4,7 magnitude quake which caused structural damage to buildings. Residents have been told to stay calm in light of the 5.9M earthquake in the Russian town.

As this report was being written three additional quakes or after shocks have occurred in approximately the same area and the 5.9 rumble. No damage or lost of life has yet been reported.
